Hi Jessica! You make some great observations about the two party system, but I think you were too dismissive of the nature of the changes that would need to be made to support a multi-party system. We didn't choose two party system, a two party system is what evolved from specific structural choices, particularly first-past-the-post elections. A stable multi-party system would require fundamental changes in the way we elect Congress. That said, as I reread Article 1 of the Constitution, would there be any prohibition against a state electing by party slate and apportioning representatives to parties based on percentage of the vote?
