Hi Joe! I fully agree, you cannot separate the Confederacy from slavery. Yes, it was in one sense about states' rights: It was about states' rights to HAVE SLAVERY. On the other hand, it makes me sad to see the Taliban-style purging. Most of our early presidents owned slaves, but that does not diminish the power of their ideas about freedom, only makes them flawed hypocrites like the rest of humanity.
